What documents do I need to move to Australia as a India citizen?
Typical pathway: Skilled Nominated
Last verified: September 22, 2026
- Indian passport (biographical page) for each applicant (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Valid Indian passport; the Department requires the biographical/photo page of the current passport or travel document for each visa applicant, uploaded in ImmiAccount. Keep the original for travel and identity checks. - Positive skills assessment for nominated ANZSCO occupation (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Outcome letter from the relevant Australian assessing authority (e.g. ACS for ICT, Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, CA ANZ) for the nominated occupation. Must be suitable and valid at time of invitation; the assessment must match the ANZSCO code used in the EOI and visa application. - English language test result (Competent English or higher) (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Evidence that at time of invitation you had at least Competent English, from a test taken in the three years immediately before invitation (e.g. IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT). Indian applicants cannot rely on passport nationality for this — a test is required unless an exemption applies. - Functional English evidence for adult dependants (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Separate evidence of Functional English for each dependent applicant aged 18 or over at the time the application is lodged (test result or accepted alternative). If not provided, a second Visa Application Charge may apply instead. - State/territory nomination approval and SkillSelect invitation letter (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skillselect
Nomination decision from the nominating state or territory (e.g. NSW, Victoria, South Australia) plus the SkillSelect invitation and EOI summary with EOI reference number. The visa must be lodged within 60 days of the invitation. - Indian Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from Passport Seva / Indian mission (before) — Source: https://www.passportindia.gov.in/psp/ApplyPCC
National-level PCC for Australian migration purposes obtained via the Passport Seva Online Portal and a PSK/POPSK/RPO in India, or from the Indian High Commission/Consulate if you are already overseas. Local police-station certificates are generally not accepted; obtain one for each applicant aged 16+. Also needed for any other country lived in 12+ months in the last 10 years. - Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Police Check (before) — Source: https://www.afp.gov.au/national-police-checks
Required if you (or any applicant aged 16+) have spent 12 months or more cumulatively in Australia in the last 10 years — common for Indian applicants transitioning from a student or 485 visa. Obtained directly from the AFP using the immigration purpose code. - Immigration health examination results (eMedical, panel physician) (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/health
Health examinations for the main applicant and every included family member, completed with a Home Affairs-approved panel physician / clinic in India (or Australia) and referenced by HAP ID through My Health Declarations or ImmiAccount. Usually includes medical exam, chest X-ray and, where applicable, blood tests. - Indian birth certificate (or acceptable alternative age/identity evidence) (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Birth certificate showing both parents' names for each applicant to establish age (age points are assessed at invitation). If no birth certificate exists, a Non-Availability Certificate plus alternative evidence such as school leaving certificate, 10th standard certificate or family register may be accepted — verify acceptable substitutes with Home Affairs. - Marriage certificate / relationship evidence for included partner (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Indian marriage certificate registered under the Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act, or evidence of a de facto relationship (joint bank accounts, joint lease, shared correspondence), to include a spouse or partner as a secondary applicant or to claim partner points. - Skilled employment evidence for claimed points (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Distinct supporting set for each claimed employment period in the 10 years before invitation: employer reference letters on letterhead stating role, duties, dates and hours; plus corroborating payslips, Form 16 / Indian Income Tax Returns, EPF statements and salary bank statements. - Academic qualification certificates and transcripts (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-nominated-190
Degree/diploma certificates and consolidated mark sheets from Indian universities for qualification points, plus any Australian study evidence if claiming the Australian study requirement. Certified copies required; these are separate from the skills assessment outcome letter. - NAATI-certified English translations of non-English documents (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/translation-services
Certified English translations for any document in Hindi or another Indian language (e.g. birth, marriage, or state-issued records). Translations done in Australia must be by a NAATI-certified translator; translations done in India must show the translator's full name, address and qualifications. - Form 80 – Personal particulars for character assessment (before) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/form-listing/forms/80.pdf
Detailed personal-history form frequently requested by case officers for Indian-national skilled applicants, covering all addresses, employment and international travel for the past 10 years. Lodge only if requested or to pre-empt a request. - Visa grant notice (VEVO record) for subclass 190 (during) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/already-have-a-visa/check-visa-details-and-conditions
The electronic grant letter stating your visa subclass, grant date, initial 5-year travel facility and any conditions. There is no visa label in the passport — carry a printed copy and know your VEVO details for airline check-in and border clearance. - Incoming Passenger Card declaration (during) — Source: https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/crossing-the-border/passenger-cards
Completed on arrival (paper card or digital equivalent) declaring food, plant and animal items — relevant for Indian arrivals carrying spices, dry foods, Ayurvedic preparations or seeds, which are strictly controlled by biosecurity. - Tax File Number (TFN) registration (during) — Source: https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/tax-file-number
Apply online with the ATO once in Australia using your passport and visa details; without a TFN your employer withholds tax at the top rate. Distinct from an ABN, which is only needed if you work as a sole trader. - Medicare enrolment as a permanent resident (during) — Source: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/enrolling-medicare-if-youre-australian-permanent-resident
Enrol via myGov or the Medicare enrolment form with Services Australia, providing your passport and permanent-resident visa evidence for each person enrolled; documents do not need to be certified. Enrolment is not automatic on visa grant. - Driver licence conversion from Indian licence (after) — Source: State/Territory road transport authority (e.g. Service NSW, VicRoads, Service SA)
Convert your Indian driving licence to a state licence (e.g. Service NSW, VicRoads, Service SA) within the permitted period after becoming a permanent resident; you will generally need the original Indian licence plus an official English translation, proof of identity and proof of residential address. Rules, test exemptions and deadlines differ by state — verify with your state road authority. - Evidence of living and working in the nominating state (2 years) (after) — Source: Nominating State/Territory skilled migration authority (e.g. NSW Government, Live in Melbourne, Migration SA)
Keep leases, utility bills, employment contracts and payslips showing residence in the nominating state/territory. Subclass 190 holders give a moral commitment to live and work in that state for about two years; states may ask for outcome reporting, and this evidence also supports later nomination-related requests. - Resident Return Visa (subclass 155/157) when travel facility expires (after) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/resident-return-visa-155-157
Your subclass 190 travel facility lasts 5 years from grant. To re-enter Australia as a PR after that, apply for an RRV via ImmiAccount — the 5-year subclass 155 generally requires 2 years (730 days) lawful residence in Australia in the preceding 5 years. Important for Indians travelling frequently to India. - Australian citizenship application (residence evidence pack) (after) — Source: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship/become-a-citizen/permanent-resident
After meeting the general residence requirement (generally 4 years lawful residence including the last 12 months as a permanent resident), apply for citizenship by conferral with identity documents, PR grant evidence and residence history. Note India does not permit dual citizenship — you must surrender your Indian passport and obtain a Surrender Certificate, then an OCI card if desired.
